Geranium plants produce beautiful flowers in a variety of colors, from light pink, deep red, and interesting mixes. Geraniums like lots of sun (but not too much) and well-drained soil with a neutral pH balance. They also thrive in indoor pots. If you’re opting to grow them indoors, it’s recommended that you place your pot in a window with southern exposure or morning sunlight exposure. You’ll be surprised at how tough geraniums are!
Easy Annual Flowers: Marigold
A sun-loving flower that comes in a variety of colors, marigolds are easy to grow and very resilient. Plant them in spring and they’ll last all summer long. Keep them well-watered and you’ll also have a hearty plant that you can cut from throughout the growing season. They pack a color punch in the landscape and even help to deter pests from your vegetable plants. In short: marigolds are one of the darlings of the summer garden!
This gorgeous annual flower is one of our favorites. Growing zinnias couldn’t be easier—plant them in any sunny spot and they’ll spread and bloom in no time. Each blossom can last up to a week! This makes it easy to take cuttings for indoor arrangements or plant your favorite varieties in colorful clusters outside.
The adorable flower is a cinch to grow in pots, as well as in gardens. Petunias tend to do best when planted in full sun or partial shade, so keep that in mind before planting them outside. Because petunias bloom on new growth, they need regular watering.
Lobularia (Sweet Alyssum)
This sweet-smelling annual is one of the easiest annual flowers to grow. It’s a good choice for beginners, as it can thrive in a wide range of soil types and temperatures, is drought tolerant, and blooms quickly. Just make sure not to overwater; lobularia don’t like wet feet.
Easy Annual Flowers: Sunflowers
Though they are one of the most popular flowers, sunflowers are also some of the easiest annual plants to grow. They require very little care besides regular watering, so if you’re looking for a way to grow something that won’t require much energy or effort, sunflowers might be just what you’re looking for. To start, select a spot in your garden where they will get at least 8 hours of sunlight per day. A lot of sunflower varieties can grow to great heights, so make sure they have enough room. Water regularly and have fun watching their progress. Kids love growing sunflowers!
The begonia is a favorite for beginners because it’s so easy to grow, requiring only indirect sunlight and soil that drains well. Begonias lend themselves well to containers and hanging baskets. They’re available in a wide range of colors, including red, pink, orange and white. It’s not necessary to fertilize your begonias if you have them planted in good potting soil, but you can increase their yields by doing so once a month during the spring and summer months.
